Which Type Of Adoption Is Right For Your Family?

Our family law firm can assist you with a range of the most common adoption scenarios, including:

Stepparent adoption: When a stepparent adopts their spouse’s child, it can help solidify the bond within blended families and provide legal recognition of the stepparent’s role. It often requires the voluntary or court-ordered termination of parental rights (TPR) of the noncustodial biological parent. Our attorneys can advocate for you at all steps in the process, including if the adoption is contested by the other parent.

Private adoption: Prospective parents work directly with birth mothers (or birth parents) or through an adoption agency. This can involve infants or older children and often includes creating an adoption plan that respects the wishes of the birth parents. The legal process involves background checks, home studies and court approval.

Relative adoption: When a child is adopted by a relative, often a grandparent or other extended family member. It is also commonly called kinship adoption, and it can provide a sense of continuity and stability for the child. The adoption process may be simpler and quicker compared to other types.

Interstate adoption: This is necessary when adoptive parents and the child live in different states. You must comply with the adoption laws of both states and the Interstate Compact on the Placement of Children (ICPC) to ensure all legal requirements for adoption are met.

Agency adoption: An adoption agency facilitates the match between birth parents and adoptive families. Agencies provide support throughout the adoption process, including counseling, legal assistance and post-adoption services.

International adoption: Adopting a child from another country can be a lengthy and complex process, involving immigration procedures and international regulations. Parents must comply with both U.S. adoption laws and those of the child’s home country.

No matter which type you pursue, our experienced adoption lawyers are here to assist you every step of the way.
